Chapter Twenty-Six
âCan I ask a question?â asked Slater, as they walked down the stairs from Murrayâs office.
âYou can always ask,â Goodnews said, âbut you have to remember there are some questions a lady just doesnât have to answer. And then, of course, thereâs always my privilege of rank.â
âThat thing with Murray. Heâs the DCI and youâre the DI, yet thereâs no doubt you were in charge. How does that work?â
âAh. Yes,â she said, mysteriously. âIâm afraid thatâs one of those questions I donât have to answer.â
âDonât you trust me?â Slater asked.
âBelieve me, itâs not that,â she said. âThe thing is, other people have put their trust in me. Would you expect me to break their trust just to satisfy your curiosity?â
âAh. Right. I see. No, of course I wouldnât expect you to do that. Is the Old Man on the way out?â
Goodnews smiled at him, but didnât answer. Instead, she changed the subject.
âSo now weâve gone from having no suspects at all, to having three,â she said. âSo letâs hear where you think we should go from here.â
Slater was itching to know more about Goodnews and Murray, but he didnât want to push his luck. She had quickly calmed down, but he didnât want to risk pushing the launch button again. It would keep . . . for now.
âOkay,â he said. âWe have no idea where Slick Tony is, or might be. I agree with you heâs unlikely to be here in person, so really we have no idea who weâre looking for. We donât exactly know where Jimmy Jones is, but we do know heâs still in custody. While itâs not impossible heâs involved, again he wonât be here in person. So, once more, we donât know who weâre looking for. Tommy Howes, on the other hand, shouldnât be that hard to track down. We can make a start with Normanâs wife.â
âWeâre on the same wavelength, then. Thatâs good to know,â she said.
She looked at her watch.
âItâs just gone three. Do you fancy driving up to the big city now?â
âWhy not?â said Slater. âMy car, or yours?â
âYou can have the pleasure of driving up there,â said Goodnews. âItâs one of my pet hates.â
Slaterâs phone started ringing just as they reached the incident room door.
âItâs Becks,â said the voice in his ear when he answered. âAre you in the building?â
âI was just going out,â he replied.
âIâve got the results from your cigarette butts.â
âBrilliant. Iâll be right down.â Slater had almost forgotten about the evidence he had found at the bottom of the tree outside Normanâs house.
He turned to Goodnews.
âBecks has got the results from my cigarette butts. If you can hang on a few minutes, Iâll go down and get them.â
âI need to see whatâs going on before we go,â she said. âThatâll take a few minutes.â
âIâll be five at the most,â he promised her and rushed off to the basement.
* * *
Goodnews pushed her way through the door into the incident room. Steve Biddeford was waiting for her. She sat down at her desk and looked wearily at the pile of Post-it notes.
